Flåm

Day 8
On our final day in Norway we planned on doing the Flåm zipline, the longest zipline in Norway. The recommended way of getting to the zipline was by train, however train tickets were sold out until later than we wanted to stay in the Flåm area. Instead, we decided to drive the Rallar Road up the Flåmsdalen valley to the goat cheese farm at the bottom of the zipline and walk the remaining 2.2 miles to the top.
Flåmsdalen is a 18 km long narrow valley in Aurland municipality, Sogn og Fjordane. Flåmsbanen (Flåm railway) goes from Flåm up to Myrdal station on the Bergensbanen (Bergen railway). An older road goes up Flåmsdalen to Myrdal which was originally a construction road in connection with the Bergensbanen. Currently, the road is set up as a bicycle and hiking trail (part of the Rallar road).

Despite some light rain, the 40 minute drive up the windy gravel roads of Flåmsdalen was beautiful. We arrived at the goat cheese farm and were promptly told we were not supposed to drive there, let alone park, and were directed to turn around and park near the previous farmer’s property instead.

We backtracked, found parking and began our walk to the top of the zipline. A two mile walk doesn’t sound bad, but was very challenging for Linsey due to the steep incline, Derek was not phased at all, proving he is in far better shape.
Ziplines are a longstanding tradition in the Flåm valley. The ziplines ('løypestreng') were primarily used to transport goods, timber, hay, milk barrels and even animals from mountain farms and rocky outcrops.

There were two lines side by side, so we were able to ride the zipline at the same time, but Linsey's line was slightly faster so she beat him to the bottom. For Linsey's first time ziplining, it was a pretty extraordinary experience, and well earned with the hike to get there.
After the Flåm area, we made our way east toward Oslo where we would stay before our early flight the next morning. It was bittersweet drive, the end of our wonderful trip, where we made memories to last a lifetime, but the next day we would be home with our pets who missed us.

Words cannot express how grateful we are for Mats and Madli. You were a huge part of the trip and we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
